Dr. Ashutosh A. Murkute, assumed the charge of In-charge Director General, National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (ni-msme) on 19 March 2025. After completing Ph.D. from I.I.T., Delhi he started research career as Scientist ‘C’ at DRDO – Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR, DRDO), Leh-Ladakh. Besides developing agro-technologies suitable for high altitude, he established a prototype for solar thermal greenhouse and an experimental tissue culture lab at Leh. Dr. Murkute (Senior Scientist), worked on post-harvest management of onion and garlic at ICAR – Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Pune.

He established a protocol for cold – storage of onion vis-à-vis inherent potential of different cultivars. He also developed a complete protocol for production of virus-free planting material of garlic through microbulbiles using mericlones and established a tissue culture lab for the mass production. At ICAR – Central Citrus Research Institute, Nagpur, Dr. Murkute (Principal Scientist), worked on citrus improvement program and also projects on abiotic stress management. His team released three citrus varieties i.e. pummelo (Citrus grandis) cv. NRCC Pummelo-5, grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) cv. Flame and Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) cv. Cutter Valencia through State Variety Release Committee (SVRC), Maharashtra and a grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) cv. NRCC Grapefruit -6 through institute for commercial cultivation.

He published research articles in high rated peer reviewed journals of international repute on high-density panting, organic cultivation, tissue culture etc. There are many books, book-chapters, popular articles etc. to his credit. As a Chairman of Works Committee he completed civil works of Rs. 500 lakhs and through project of revolving fund scheme he earned revenue of more than Rs 700 lakhs by selling quality disease-free citrus plants of acid lime, mandarin, sweet orange and other improved citrus cultivars at CCRI, Nagpur. As PI/ Co-PI of externally funded competitive grants he handled research project of more than Rs 3000 lakhs, besides institute funded projects. Appointments such as Adjunct Professor at I.I.T. Delhi; Member, Board of Management of Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Agricultural University, Gwalior; Member, Academic Council of Nagpur University, Member, Management Committees of ICAR institutes’, Member, Board of Studies, Central Agriculture University, Imphal are some of the prestigious recognitions for his illustrious career.
